Chapter Eight

Simon looked down at the basket placed beneath the tree. He had no idea when she’d left it there. Perhaps, when she went to fetch Violet and ask her to bring them dinner upstairs. He shook his head. When she told him she’d left something for him near the willow tree he hadn’t paid any attention. As a matter a fact, he’d almost left without looking. At the last moment, however, he’d recalled the little witch’s words and curiosity had driven him forward.

His better nature told him to leave the basket and never come back, but now that he had it in front of him, he couldn’t. He curled his hands into fists. His heart hurt like it hadn’t in years. He was eager to become a bear and curl into a corner of his cave to sleep off the pain.

He couldn’t leave the basket, though. There was a mirror. It peaked from the folds of the cloth covering the rest of the objects, teasing him. He hadn’t looked at himself in a glass in years. What had Maggie seen in him? Fear and curiosity drove him and he took it with him.

As soon as he was at a prudential distance from the house, he stopped. Eagerly, he kneeled on the grass and uncovered the objects inside. His jaw fell as he caught sight of toiletry items. One by one, he picked them up and laid them out in the grass in front of him. There was a razor, scissors, soap, a lantern, and even a clean shirt.

He wanted to cry or perhaps, he wanted to laugh. He wasn’t sure what emotion prevailed as he stared at the line of objects in front of him. Only the mirror was left inside the wicker basket. What did he look like that the young girl felt compelled to give him this?

Shaking, he reached for the heavily decorated handle and lifted it to his face. His eyes widened in shock. How could either woman stand to look at him? He was a mess. His beard was long and unkempt, the tangles visible even in the waning light of the moon. His cheekbones were more pronounced than he remembered and his eyes looked sunken and tired. How could Margaret want him? How could she have kissed him? Heartache mingled with unsteady happiness filled his heart. A smile crept onto his face at the memory of her lips on his, her fruity taste. Margaret. She’d kissed him with passion. There wasn’t an ounce of disgust in the way her lips melded against his.

His gaze fell on the objects before him once more. Morgana’s message was suddenly clear. Margaret might have kissed him this night, but if he wanted to cast a lasting impression, he had to clean up. It made no difference. He wouldn’t be returning tomorrow night or ever.

Simon chewed on his bottom lip as he placed everything back inside the basket. Remember you promised. Margaret’s eyes pierced through him. Green and pure and full of hope.
